While most boats will operate on 12 VDC or 28 VDC while at sea they still have regular 120 volt systems on board. This allows the boat to be connected to shore while moored. However, you just can not use any old plug or cord to connect to shore power. Boats require specialized water-tight connectors and housings that ensure that you are protected from accidental shorts.
